Sponsored Adoptions
Some shelter dogs need a little extra help finding the right home.
Friends of JAS sponsors adoption fees for select dogs at Joint Animal Services, especially dogs who have been waiting longer for adoption or who may benefit from additional attention and promotion. By covering the adoption fee, we hope to remove one more barrier between a deserving dog and a loving family.
How the program began
The idea started with Harry.
Harry was a sweet dog, but he was having a hard time finding a home. Several Friends of JAS board members volunteer regularly with shelter dogs at Joint Animal Services, and Harry was one of the dogs we worried might continue to be overlooked.
After talking with JAS staff, we decided to sponsor Harry’s adoption fee. Sponsorship gave him additional visibility and helped remove the financial hurdle for his future adopter. Harry was successfully adopted, and his story inspired us to continue helping other dogs as our budget allows.
Why sponsor an adoption?
Long shelter stays can be difficult for dogs. Some become increasingly stressed, while others are simply overlooked despite being wonderful companions.
Sponsoring an adoption can help in two ways: it gives a dog additional attention and it removes the adoption fee for the family who chooses to bring that dog home.
For some adopters, that $110 fee can be a real obstacle. If covering it helps a family welcome a shelter dog into their home—and helps that dog leave the shelter sooner—we think that is money well spent.
